Safari 5 has been released and has some new features

Apple Releases Safari 5

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today released Safari® 5, the latest version of the world’s fastest and most innovative web browser, featuring the new Safari Reader for reading articles on the web without distraction, a 30 percent performance increase over Safari 4,* and the ability to choose Google, Yahoo! or Bing as the search service powering Safari’s search field. Available for both Mac® and Windows, Safari 5 includes improved developer tools and supports more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies that allow web developers to create rich, dynamic websites. With Safari 5, developers can now create secure Safari Extensions to customize and enhance the browsing experience.

“Safari continues to lead the pack in performance, innovation and standards support,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari now runs on over 200 million devices worldwide and its open source WebKit engine runs on over 500 million devices.”

Safari Reader makes it easy to read single and multipage articles on the web by presenting them in a new, scrollable view without any additional content or clutter. When Safari 5 detects an article, users can click on the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field to display the entire article for clear, uninterrupted reading with options to enlarge, print or send via email.

Powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, Safari 5 on the Mac runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4, three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6.* Safari 5 loads new webpages faster using Domain Name System (DNS) prefetching, and improves the caching of previously viewed pages to return to them more quickly.

Safari 5 adds more than a dozen powerful HTML5 features that allow web developers to create media-rich experiences, including full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video. Other new HTML5 features in Safari 5 include HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource and WebSocket.

The new, free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize and enhance Safari 5 with extensions based on standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The Extension Builder, new in Safari 5, simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extensions. For enhanced security and stability, Safari Extensions are sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser.

Pricing & Availability

Safari 5 is available for both Mac OS® X and Windows as a free download at www.apple.com/safari. Safari 5 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard® 10.6.2 or later. If you haven’t heard, you’ve probably been living under a rock or are not as much into gadgets as I am.

iphone 3gs

New features include a landscape keyboard, cut/copy/paste function, search, and a compass. I’d probably get one of these if AT&T didn’t suck, but I love my service with Verizon and am sticking with it. Maybe one day when the iPhone comes to Verizon like rumored…maybe one day…probably not though…i’ll stick to my Blackberry

Primate Labs tested the newly released Macbooks against their predecessors and the results are?

There is very little improvement for both the memory and processor performance.

Read the article and make the decision for yourself…but to me…its not worth the price jump. Hopefully the next update will bring better processors.

Til then, i’ll stick with my current Macbook. and hey…computers are always upgraded, so there’s always gonna be something faster.

Apple released the specs today on the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros. I’m not very impressed from what I’ve read so far. I’m gonna stick with talking about the Macbooks because that’s what I have.

The new trackpad is blah. No mouse button so you can only click on the trackpad. This doesn’t seem useful at all for those of us doing graphics work need something to click or its not gonna work very well.

The new glossy screen is also blah. Glossy screens plus photo editing is a no no. Photos need to be edited on normal monitors because the colors are represented more truly than on a glossy screen.

No firewire for the Macbooks. Video capturing without firewire is…stupid. Yes, I know the Macbooks aren’t supposed to be used for high end stuff, but they can be. I guess they’re trying to push people doing on the road editing towards Macbook Pros.

The price jump for the Macbook is not were looking for. Everyone was hoping that Apple would drop the price of the Macbooks to get a better foot hold in the laptop market since the price of Windows based laptops are going down. So instead of $1099 and $1299 for a 2.1 GHZ and a 2.4 GHZ…the price for the new Macbooks are $1299 and $1599 for a 2.0 GHZ and a 2.4 GHZ. That’s a pretty significant bump in price.

I do kind of like that they are now a unibody aluminum enclosure, but the fact that its two-toned brushed aluminum and black is…meh.

Backlit keyboard is a plus (not available on the $1299 Macbook), but not a necessity since your fingers get pretty used to the key locations. Superdrive standard is a plus, but I don’t burn that much stuff so its no big deal.

I’m not too impressed with the update and won’t be updating any time soon.
